RB Depth: Your Top Priority
08/18/2007

In Fantasy Football, the Running Back position is the base of your team. Throughout this article, I will give you reasoning behind my theory. So, when it comes to winning championships, you must have a solid sore of Running Backs. Wide Receivers and Quarterbacks will not get you there alone.

Let first talk about fantasy points. No other position scores more points in fantasy football then the running back position. My advice to you is to make sure you get two RBs by round two or three. In a standard 10-team league, you have to play one QB, two RBs and three WRs. The difference between the No. 1 QB last year (Peyton Manning) and the No. 10 (Vince Young) averaged out to just six points per game. Yet the difference between last year's No. 1 RB (LaDainian Tomlinson) and the No. 24 RB (Warrick Dunn) was over sixteen points a game. This is two field goals per week vs. over two TDs per week. That’s a pretty wide margin. There's a lot of depth at QB and you can get one in the later rounds but if you take a QB in the first round, you won't find a strong No. 2 RB in round three or four.
Lets take a look at WRs. In my league we start 3 WRs. I believe that WR depth this year is huge. WRs are a dime a dozen. You score in fantasy football the same way you score in real football - by touching the ball. Don't waste an early pick on a WR - they are too inconsistent. Consider this, only four WR had five 100-yard games last season: Torry Holt, Roy Williams, Marvin Harrison, and Reggie Wayne. There are a few BIG names missing from this list that have put up very good numbers, BUT WERE NOT CONSISTANT DURING THE SEASON. Examples: Chad Johnson, Steve Smith, Larry Fitzgerald, Terrell Owens, and Anquan Boldin(who actually had 5 – 100yd games in BOTH of his previous 2 years). All I am saying is that WRs are inconsistent. You can always find a guy in the middle rounds. In the meantime, you should build the base of your team around Running Backs. Sure, I have seen teams draft three Wide Receivers in the first three rounds, and they made the playoffs. It can happen!! But, I honestly believe that your odds are better, not only getting to the playoffs, but winning the Championship! And that is what fantasy football is all about!
